When we’re born, the second we come out as soon as the tears stop and the flesh in our lungs have tasted air for the first time. It’s a stressful experience, a lot happens during birth for baby and mother. So to sooth the child, you nurse almost immediately. Anatomically when the baby suckles and nurses, the nipple slides to the back of babys mouth resting on the innervates the palatoglossus muscle, this is almost a button you can press to activate the vagus nerve. This activates the parasypathetic side of the nervous system. Sends signals to the brain to secrete hormones that help settle the baby by lowering heart-rate, releasing oxytocin, regulating temperature and matching the slowing heart-rate of mother. A full belly, a warm body, and love have been a source of comfort from the moment we entered the world. We are biologically wired to crave and enjoy this, it keeps us alive.
While we are biologically wired to enjoy simple pleasures such as eating, sex, connection. When we have stressors in life, our desire to self regulate coming off a “stressful” response to the body, is driven by the craving of oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. The chemicals are delivered to us over things like food, sex, and connection.
What we call pleasure is just the body reinforcing what keeps us alive and connected.
I think people are so scared of pleasure because they’re scared it will engulf their entire life. That they will succumb to the pleasure and they will be fat, lazy, addicts of whatever they choose to engage with. I think the major influence to this fear is in America we don’t do anything half-assed, we tend to be pretty extreme. That’s why we have some of the wealthiest people in the world and also the fattest. We are so driven by grit and capitalism, we must conquer! We must be rigid and multitask because no second can be wasted! We could always be doing MORE! Listen, I love to experience, I love to multitask. I’m not saying it’s a total dig but the way we approach our stressors matters.
When I say you have to take pleasure in your meals, loving the act of eating is only one facet of the machine. Taking the time to slow roast bones, hand pick the herbs, boil the broth for 10 hours, starting the mixing of bread in the morning, taking time to build tension in bread for hours to bake right before dinner, just to enjoy it with a small bowl of noodles & butter later. That is what I mean when you love the meal. If you love your child you do the difficult things. If you love your body and understand food is the fuel is uses to accelerate or harm your body, you start taking affection in the creation process. You need to love and take pleasure in your meals and knowing good things require effort.
Not every meal has to meet a macro caloric marker. You can just enjoy it because you enjoy it. Since treating food as art, as a source of affection to self and my children, a source of NOURISHMENT AND COMFORT, my body has never looked healthier with more ease. Am I the leanest I could be? No! Am I over weight? Also no! I look healthy, there is life in my cheeks, my skin glows, I have a healthy non painful period, I have clear thinking, I feel strong in my workouts.
When we look at biomarkers of the individuals who live the longest (people in the blue zone), they enjoy their life. They take extreme pleasure in the simplicities in life. They eat well! They drink! They walk often, they sit in the sun, they love to garden, their meat is processed right on their land, they eat seasonally and they look forward to the seasons and the gifts each brings. I have watched many Italian interviews with elderly asking how they live so long and what to do and every one of them mentions loving their partner, have sex and have it often, loving their children and their families passionately, eat well, study your affections, and love your life.
